Everyone reading this has something they’ve been wanting to do in life.
“I’m going to be a writer.”
“I make movies”
“I draw comic books”
“I’m going to get my CPA”
“I’m going to be CEO one day”
“I’m going to go build wells in Africa”
But, there is always something in the way. Fear. If you want to be a writer, there is only one way to start – by writing. Then after you write, you have to finish something. An article, a post, a book, a love-letter, anything. Then you show it to people. Voila, you’re a writer! That doesn’t mean anyone will care about your writing, but hey, at least you finished something. Now you just have to sell it.
A lot of us get stuck in a mindset that we are always becoming something by never starting it. The only way to accomplish something, is to take action! The future is dark and scary. Maybe you will end up wasting your time. If you don’t take action – you’re going to waste your time anyways. We waste time every single day, with Netflix, with Facebook, with Instagram, reading romance novels. Whatever you’re into – we all have ways we waste time. If you could just take 1 hour per day to focus toward something that matters to you, you won’t regret it.
There was a time when I was stuck deciding if I should try starting my first company, Zimidy. I had people telling me it wasn’t worth it, that it would be a waste of time, that I should just got to MBA school or focus on my career. I almost never got started. Until one day a friend asked me a simple question; “If it’s something you want to do, then why haven’t you done it?” When I realized all my answers that could keep me from starting were just excuses, I got started. I don’t think I’ve ever made a better decision in my life, and in a way, I owe it all to that simple question.
There is a comfort about being able to tell somebody you’re going to do something without ever really working toward it. You get to create an image of yourself in your mind that isn’t the person you are today. The person you’re not happy being. This future you, the version that is doing all the things you dream of – that’s who you see yourself as. It’s paralyzing to think of starting, because if you try and fail, that image is destroyed. Then you’re just you. Do you want to end your life having only become the person you are today? Think about it.
It’s 50 years from now, and you’re lying in the crisp hospital bed, apple sauce still smeared on the corner of your mouth. Your kids are at the bedside holding your wrinkly old hand. Your grand kids are on their hip. You look at their young faces with hope for what they become. When you struggle to pull the breath out of your lungs and tell them your wisest words – will they be to walk in your footsteps; or to avoid your mediocrity? To take chances on what they love? Will your heart be filled with regret for an incomplete life, or will you be filled with happiness from the legacy you left behind?
If you’re reading this, it’s probably going to be filled with regret. Unless you make a change! Quit acting like you’re becoming something and get started. Figure out what the absolute first thing is that you need to do, and go do it. Don’t look to the finish line; don’t worry about knowing every single thing that needs to be done. Don’t get bogged down in analysis of if the cost of trying is worth it compared to the cost of sitting on your ass. Find step 1 and take it. Rush after it. Only then can you stop being a fraud and start becoming who you truly want to be.
If you want to be a writer, go complete a chapter or article.
If you want to make movies, then post something you’ve recorded to youtube.
If you want to draw comic books; then finish a frame.
If you want to be a CPA then go learn what a profit and loss statement is.
If you want to become a CEO, then start by learning what it means to lead.
If you want to build wells, find a charity that’s doing it already, and send them an email.
If those aren’t your thing or you’ve already done that then check the internet. Google “how to become ________”. Fill in the blank with whatever you want to do and you’ll have the answer in no time!
The more you keep taking each next step as you complete the last, the more visible the future you becomes. Eventually it’s just you. Then it’s time to figure out if the new you is the final you, or not. If there is another you to work toward, at least by then you’ll know that to get there you just need to take the first step.
Don’t get caught up in fear of failure, becoming who you want to be starts with starting and starting is pretty easy. Don’t give up and you’ll be who you want to become in no time!
